A credit card payoff calculator answers two questions: how long will it take to pay off my card at the payment I can afford, and how much do I need to pay each month to be debt-free by a date I choose. Enter your balance, APR, and monthly payment to see both.
The calculator also shows what happens if you pay only the minimum. Most issuers set the minimum at about 1% of the balance plus that month's interest, with a floor of around $25. Because the minimum shrinks as the balance falls, minimum-only payoff often takes 20 years or more and can cost more in interest than the original balance.
Use the result to set a fixed payment in your budget planner. If you have several cards, compare the snowball and avalanche orders in the debt payoff planner, and read our guide on how long it takes to pay off credit card debt for worked examples.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to pay off a credit card?
It depends on your balance, APR, and payment. At 22% APR, a $10,000 balance takes about 3 years at $382 a month, but more than 20 years if you pay only a shrinking minimum.
How is the minimum payment estimated?
The calculator uses a common issuer formula: 1% of the balance plus that month's interest, with a $25 floor. Check your statement for your issuer's exact rule.
How much do I need to pay to clear my card in a set time?
Enter your target in months. The "payment to hit your target" result is the fixed monthly payment that clears the balance by then, assuming no new charges.
